Pregnancy is a very special and unique time in a women's life. Pregnancy and birth are a profound rite of passage. Women may now feel a need to be healthy and whole for not only themselves but for their babies. Sharing their bodies with this new life brings a new sense of awareness and awe at all the changes that they are going through. Pre-natal yoga offers these women an opportunity to connect with their breath their bodies and their babies. They have now started a very personal journey which brings them into their transition to mothers.
In my experience, pre natal and post natal yoga classes transform and prepare women in a profound way. The asana practice is only part of this practice. The breathing, relaxation and connection with other women when combined with the asana are what makes this women centered practice so powerful.
Within my frame work I like to provide my women with as many resources and ideas for their birthing toolbox.
In my classes we will also be exploring active birth, going through informed choice vs informed consent, discussing the role of the birth partner, showing them positions in yoga for optimal fetal positioning and suggesting positions for different stages of labour. Using mindfulness and sharing local resources that I have gathered we become a supportive community of women.
I offer women a 60 minute class with a 30 minute discussion at the end. Over time as their practice deepens they can see themselves getting stronger and trusting their own instincts and inner strength as well as outer. This is how women empower themselves.
For women coming into a class for the first time I create an environment and class structure so they grow safe, confident and strong. A class that does not intimidate and exclude them in any way physically. A class with a basic framework with lots of options for modifications. Classes that are staged and appropriate for the growing pregnancy . Building each week very slowly and asking each student to work at their own pace according to how they feel in the moment. Coming to these classes brings to life the concepts learned in my training.
Women and their bodies are strong.
Childbirth and pregnancy are a profound rite of passage, not a medical event.
Childbirth and pregnancy are a spiritual process of self discovery.
